Description

This is a graphic novel page inspired by one of my favorite artists, Andrew Bird. I wanted to depict an imaginary portrait of his creative process in a way that to me, matches his style of music. It's ink on illustration board, and layered coffee washes (Yes. Coffee. ;) in the background. The quote on the silk paper that weaves through the narrative is one by Andrew himself about creating the album 'Nobel Beast', and it says this:

"...I had a very specific thing I wanted to hear: the music I was hearing in my head, but wasn’t hearing in the world. I wanted to work with warm, woody, fecund, bubbly, mossy textures; I wanted to get a sense of decay in the sound, like some nook in a forest that’s steamy and green and verdant and buzzing and alive with microscopic life. This emotional, ecological Steve Reich kind of thing. But nothing ever goes to plan. The microscopic organisms took on a life of their own, evolved into something else entirely.”

I love Andrew Bird and your style, I had used coffee for some stuff before but can never use it that well so props to you on that, I mean wouldn't the coffee smear the ink? or did you do the coffee first?
